Technology in the Classroom
Technology in the classroom comes in different forms.
It can include:
programs to enhance communication between parents and teachers
touch screen devices with educational programs
augmented reality technology
assistive technology for preschoolers with disabilities
robot programming and gadgets
Touch screen device with an educational app:
Research shows that there is a positive connection between technology and early childhood education.
One study found that with the use of an early number sense app that provided repeated and systemic exposure to number sense activities preschool students showed an increase in both speed and accuracy. (Broda et al., 2019)

Augmented Reality Technology
Incorporating augmented reality technology in STEM education for preschoolers has been shown to increase engagement and motivation in learning activities. Research revealed promising results when augmented reality technology was integrated into traditional learning approaches. Researchers Wang, Rahman, and Shaharom used augmented reality technology to teach a lesson on the solar system to preschoolers. They found that the students were more engaged and motivated to participate in the lesson and suggested that the use of augmented reality technology could increase understanding of STEM lessons and enhance the student's problem-solving skills. (Wang et al., 2024)
Assistive Technology for Preschoolers with Disabilities
In a time when a culture of inclusion and equity is extremely important, one way to promote this culture is to utilize assistive technology for preschoolers with disabilities. In traditional classrooms the responsibility of the teacher and their support staff to ensure that children with and without disabilities are able to receive instructions, participate in classroom activities, and engage with peers and materials can be overwhelming. Incorporating the use of assistive technology can bridge the gap and ensure that preschoolers with disabilities have an opportunity to participate in class activities along with their peers (Schladant et al, 2023).

The use of gadgets and robots in early education classrooms is controversial.
One argument in favor of technology is that its use can contribute to cognition. For preschool-aged children, the benefit is based on the type of gadget or robot and the setting they are used in. Having access to appropriate gadgets and/or robots is important as well because not all early education centers provide access to gadgets and robots. Research shows that the use of gadgets, robots, and widgets can increase interest in the learning process for preschool-aged children (Dhenni et al., 2023). It is however important to limit screen time.
